Fabric Dyeing: Playing With Procion MX Dyes
Use Procion MX Fibre Reactive dyes and good quality 100% mercerised cotton lawn to produce original mottled fabrics that will combine beautifully with commercial fabrics. Note: these workshops can only be run in the warmer months where the expected daytime temperature is over 22 degrees Celsius in an area where there is access to water, including hot water and where we can make a mess!
1 day workshop	The Colour Wheel Workshop *Dye 24 fat quarters of fabric around the colour wheel in either brights or muted colours* *Dye a simple graduated colour run (6 fat quarters from light to dark in any colour)* *Dye 10 fat quarters using direct application technique to make beautiful patterned fabrics* *Total: 10 metres fabric*
1 day workshop	The Dyestock Workshop *Dye simple graduated colour runs (6 fat quarters from light to dark in each)* *Dye pieces of fabric in any colours using a variety of low water immersion techniques to produce many wonderful original fabrics* *Dye fabric using Arashi Shibori technique* *Dye fabric using many other resist techniques to produce mottled patterns and textures* *Total: 10 metres fabric*
1 day workshop	The Sequenced Overdye Workshop In this workshop you will produce 35 fat quarters of fabric which includes 2 gradated colour runs (eg blue and yellow) each of 5 pieces and 25 pieces which will be combinations of the two colours giving many different coloured pieces (eg various blues and yellows and greens!) all in a wonderful mottled pattern. You choose your own colours, of course. *Total: 9 metres of fabric*
2 day workshop	Spend 2 exciting days using Procion dyes and exploring all the wonderful ways a piece of white fabric can be turned into a masterpiece of colour and texture. *Day 1: Dye a 6 step colour wheel. Using thickened dyes, students stamp, draw, print, paint, rub or roll designs onto the fabric (approx. 12 fat quarters).* Day 2: Fabrics from day 1 will be worked to add more colour or design. Dye 6 step gradated colour runs (dark to light). Create metres of gorgeous patterned fabric using low water immersion techniques, direct application, shibori techniques etc. Create background pieces for landscapes and applique pieces. *Total: 13 metres fabric*
3 day workshop	Students learn many ways to use Procion MX dyes and dye a huge quantity of exciting original fabric. *Day 1 and 2: An expanded version of the 2 day workshop.* *Day 3: Create visual texture by folding and clamping methods. Explore discharge dyeing.* *Total: 18 metres fabric*
5 day workshop	The Ultimate Fabric Dyeing Workshop! Often, when I teach a 3 day workshop, as participants create gorgeous pieces of fabric, play with the techniques and begin to see the unlimited possibilities of working with the Procion dyes, they say "I wish we could have another couple of days doing this!" Three days is such a short time to really explore the possibilities and enjoy the creative process. A 5 day workshop covers the same techniques offered in the 3 day workshop, but in far more depth, and allows time for each participant to individually explore the processes if they wish.
